What Your Child’s First Month With Me Actually Looks Like
If you are reading this at midnight, with a sleeping child in the next room and a worry that will not switch off, this one is for you.
As one of the most trusted speech therapists and special educators in India, I want to tell you something I have learned in eight years of doing this work. The hardest part for most parents is not the therapy. It is not the money. It is not even the diagnosis.
It is the not knowing.
It is lying awake wondering what will happen if you reach out. Will someone judge you? Will they confirm your worst fear? Will they make your child feel like there is something wrong with them? Will it cost a fortune and change nothing?
I cannot take away every worry you carry. But I can take away one of them, right now, today. I can tell you exactly what the first month with me looks like, step by step, so that the unknown stops feeling so frightening. Because once you can picture it, reaching out becomes so much easier.
So let me walk you through it. Not the polished version. The real one.
Before we even begin: the night you find me
Most parents do not call me on a good day.
They call me after months of being told to “wait and see.” After a relative said something that stung. After watching another child at a birthday party chatter away while their own child stayed silent. After Googling the same three words at 2am for the hundredth time.
By the time a parent reaches me, they are usually exhausted, a little scared, and carrying a quiet guilt that they should have done something sooner. If that is you, I want you to hear this clearly: you have done nothing wrong. Noticing that your child might need help, and being brave enough to look for it, is not failing your child. It is loving them.
So when you send that first message or make that first call, you are not stepping into something cold and clinical. You are reaching a person who has sat with hundreds of parents who felt exactly like you, and who has watched their children bloom. You are in safe hands now.
Week One: We simply talk
The very first thing we do together costs you nothing. Not a rupee.
Your first consultation with me is free, and I mean genuinely free, with no catch and no pressure to sign up for anything. I made this choice years ago, and I have never regretted it. Because I believe no parent should have to pay just to ask for help, or to find out whether I am even the right person for their child.
In that first conversation, here is what happens. I listen. That is mostly it.
I ask you to tell me about your child in your own words. Not medical terms, not milestones from a chart, just your child. What they love. What makes them laugh. What worries you. When you first felt that something might be different. What other people have told you. What you are hoping for, deep down, even if it feels too big to say out loud.
I do not rush you. I do not talk over you with jargon to sound clever. I do not make you feel like one more case in a long line. I just want to understand your child, and understand you, because you know your child better than any expert ever will.
By the end of that first talk, you will know whether I feel like the right fit. And I will gently tell you, honestly, whether I believe I can help. If I am not the right person, I will say so and point you toward someone who is. That honesty matters to me more than gaining a client.
If you would like to understand the exact commitments I make before we even begin, you can read about the five promises I keep with every family. Many parents tell me afterward that they cried during or after that first call. Not from sadness, but from relief. Relief at finally being heard, finally not feeling alone in it. That relief is the real beginning.
Week One to Two: I get to know your child
Once you decide you would like to begin, the next step is for me to truly meet your child.
This is not a test. Please tell your child it is not a test, because I do not want them to feel examined or judged. For them, this just looks like play. We sit together, we explore some toys and activities, and I watch, gently, how your child responds. How they communicate, even if they have no words yet. How they react to sounds, to faces, to new things. What calms them and what overwhelms them. Where their little strengths are hiding, because every child has them, and I always find them.
This gentle assessment is one of the most important things I do, and it is also where being an individual, not a busy centre, makes the biggest difference. I am not rushing your child through a fifteen-minute slot to get to the next one. I take the time your child needs. Some children warm up in minutes. Some need a few sessions before they trust me enough to show me who they really are. Either way is completely fine. I move at your child’s pace, never my own.
By the end of this stage, I understand your child not as a label, not as a diagnosis, but as a whole little person with their own way of seeing the world. And that understanding is what everything else is built on.
Week Two to Three: A plan made only for your child
Now I sit down and build your child’s plan. And I want to be very clear about what this is, because it is the heart of why my work is different.
This plan is made only for your child. It is not pulled from a folder. It is not the same plan I gave the child before them. It is not a one-size-fits-all programme that a hundred children get handed. It is built around your child’s exact strengths, their exact challenges, and the exact goals that matter for them right now.
If your child is non-verbal, we are not going to start by demanding words. We are going to start by building connection and communication in whatever form your child can manage, sounds, gestures, pictures, and grow from there. If your child struggles to sit still, we are not going to fight that. We are going to work with it. The plan meets your child where they are, not where a textbook says a child their age should be.
And here is something I promise you: I will explain that plan to you in plain, simple words. No confusing jargon to make myself sound important. You will understand exactly what we are working toward, why, and how you can help. Because you are not a bystander in this. You are my partner.
I will set clear, realistic goals. Not impossible dreams to make you feel good, and not vague promises that can never be measured. Real, honest goals that we can actually watch your child reach, one small step at a time. The kind of goals where, in a few months, you will be able to look back and clearly see how far your child has come.
Week Three to Four: The first sessions, and the first small wins
Then we begin the real work, together.
The sessions themselves are gentle, warm, and built around play, because children learn best when they feel safe and happy, not pressured. Whether we meet in person here in Varanasi or online from wherever you are in India, your child gets my full, undivided, one-to-one attention. Not shared. Not rushed. Just focused, patient care.
Now, I am going to be completely honest with you, because honesty is one of my promises. In the first month, you will most likely not see a miracle. Anyone who promises you a miracle in four weeks is not being truthful with you, and I would rather lose your trust by being honest than keep it by lying.
But what you often will see, even in that first month, are the first small wins. And these small wins are everything.
Maybe your child holds eye contact a few seconds longer than before. Maybe they sit for a full activity for the first time. Maybe a tantrum that used to last twenty minutes now lasts five. Maybe, just maybe, a new sound. A new attempt. A flicker of a word.
These moments may look tiny to the outside world. But to you and me, they are enormous. Because they are proof. Proof that your child can grow. Proof that the silence was never emptiness, it was just a door waiting to be opened. And once a parent sees that first small win with their own eyes, something shifts. The fear starts to soften into hope.
I also do not just work with your child and send you away. From the very first week, I give you simple things to do at home, gentle activities that fit into your normal day, so that the progress does not stop when our session ends. I guide you, I answer your questions, and I keep you updated honestly on how your child is doing. You will never feel shut out, and you will never feel lost.
What the first month is really about
If I am honest with you, the first month is not really about dramatic results. It is about something quieter and more important.
It is about your child learning to trust a new person, and beginning to feel safe. It is about me truly understanding your child. It is about you finally feeling like you are not carrying this alone anymore. And it is about all of us, you, your child, and me, becoming a small team that believes in this child together.
That foundation is what makes the bigger breakthroughs possible in the months that follow. The first words. The calmer days. The school admission you were once told might never happen. Those things come. But they grow from the trust and understanding we build in this first gentle month.
You do not have to keep waiting
I think about all the parents who waited too long, not because they did not care, but because they were scared of the unknown. Scared of what reaching out might mean.
I hope that by reading this, the unknown feels a little less frightening now. You know what the first conversation looks like. You know it is free, and gentle, and honest. You know I will treat your child as if they were my own, because that is the only way I know how to work.
Your child has a voice. Sometimes it just needs the right person, and a little time, to help it find its way out. I would be honoured to be that person.
If you are still weighing your options, you may find it helpful to read how my one-to-one care differs from a big centre, or simply learn more about me and my story. When you are ready, even if your hands are shaking a little as you reach out, I am here. Let’s just talk first. No pressure, no payment, no judgement. Just one caring conversation about your child, and the first gentle step toward everything that is possible for them.
Your free consultation is waiting whenever you are. And so am I.
